  • Essay / Reflection on Patient Care - 2684

The purpose of this patient care study is to discuss the care and nursing interventions that a particular patient received during their stay on the acute medical ward. Article five of the Nursing and Midwifery Council's Code of Professional Conduct (2002) states that "as a registered nurse or midwife, you must protect confidential information" and that if information is to be revealed, consent of the patient must be requested. Patient permission was obtained after an explanation of the purpose and proposed content of the care study, in the presence of a nurse. For confidentiality reasons, the patient will be referred to under the pseudonym Kirsty. Kirsty is a seventeen-year-old woman who was diagnosed with Crohn's disease at the age of thirteen. She lives in a terraced house with her mother and is a hairdressing student. She was admitted to the children's outpatient department after a routine examination, where she presented with right-sided abdominal pain and loose stools. He was diagnosed with a flare-up of Crohn's disease. Kirsty was chosen for the purposes of this care study because her strength of character was admired and a good relationship was established. Kirsty was admitted to a twenty-six bed acute medicine ward, which mainly deals with gastrointestinal problems, but medical outliers are admitted. There are three bays: one for men and two for women, one called the day room (as it was formerly the patient's day room, but was opened as a bay due to a lack of beds) and the second is called the women's bay. There is one double side room and two single side rooms, at the top and bottom of the room. Kirsty was admitted to a bed in the women's bay. The room is divided to accommodate the primary nursing cadre...... middle of paper...... Women's Council. (2002). Code of professional ethics. London: Nursing and Midwifery Council. Pullen, M.
