    “Daisy Miller” by Henry James represents societal views and conforming lifestyle. This short story begins in Vevey, Switzerland, where Daisy meets Winterbourne through her brother Randolph. Winterbourne accompanies Daisy on a walk. Throughout the story, Daisy is seen as a flirt because she is accompanied by men. Every time Winterbourne crosses his path; There are rumors that it is inappropriate to walk around with so many men because she is a young, upper-class single woman until she eventually dies from fever. Through James' depiction of their disapproved relationship, he shows how a human's freedom is restricted by society. James suggests that people do not enjoy complete freedom because of how society views others and how they were raised by their parents. Her portrayal of an opinionated Mrs. Costello shows us that social norms are based on the judgment of others. This portrait of Mrs. Costello also shows the double standards that prevail in society. The way the story is written shows how everyone has their own social view of the world. This style of writing is complex in that a person will come to understand how they perceive the societal world. Throughout the story, we see the different judgments made of Daisy by several other characters. The shape of the story also allows us to decide how we perceive Miss Daisy as well as the other characters by showing us the opinions given by the characters. This text suggests that we might not be so quick to judge others and helps us to view society as a whole and not in divisions over what we think is appropriate behavior.
