Road cycling has become an increasingly popular physical and recreational activity and, as a result, the number of cyclists on the road has increased. Due to this increase in the number of cyclists on the road, the number of fatalities and serious injuries has also increased. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 677 cyclists have been killed and 48,000 injured in crashes involving motor vehicles. These deaths represented 2% of all road deaths (“Bicycles,” 2013). For this reason, efforts must be made to make road cycling safer for the cyclist. Many cyclists enjoy this activity as a group. Cycling clubs organize rides where cyclists ride together in groups. Additionally, many charity events are held throughout the United States, in which cyclists raise money for a particular cause or participate in a charity ride. Cyclists riding alone or in groups often frustrate motor vehicle drivers. Many believe that cyclists have no place on the road with motor vehicles.
