One explanation for this is that environments where people experience discrimination may not have the means to demand adequate resources in their neighborhoods. An example of a resource that should be available to everyone includes help and support from neighbors. According to Garbarino and Sherman (1980), “in high-risk areas there is less child care, less self-sufficiency, and less reciprocal exchange” (p192). As a result, if there is discrimination, providing these means will not be a priority and the health and well-being of members of these communities will suffer. Although black and white communities have similar characteristics, one distinction is that safer, wealthier neighborhoods surround white middle-class communities on average, while poorer neighborhoods surround black middle-class communities (DeAngelis , 2001). Discrimination is a prime example of why such statistics, even
