  • Essay / Ulysses S. Grant was a true epic hero - 1114

My epic hero was a military lieutenant from Ohio. He was born and raised in Ohio and attended military high school. Since he was a soldier, he knew a lot about leadership. As he grew up, he became a general and one of our many Presidents of the United States. As president, he did many good things for our country. Ulysses S. Grant, to me, is an epic hero because he led and fought in the military for our country and was a great president. Ulysses S. Grant was born as Hiram Ulysses Grant. He was born April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. Grant was named by his grandmother after his father lent him a book called Télémaque by Fénelon. His grandmother gave him the name Odysseus, but with Odysseus' Roman name, Odysseus. He and his parents moved the following year to Georgetown, Ohio. His father then ran a tannery business. Ulysses' father, Jesse Grant, enrolled Ulysses in a U.S. military academy at West Point. When the Congressman nominated Ulysses for West Point, he mistakenly thought that Ulysses; used his mother's maiden name, Simpson, as his middle name. Odysseus accepted the new name and did nothing. He said the “S” in his name didn’t name anything. Ulysses graduated from West Point in 1843 and was a skilled horseman. Ulysse received a commission as a second lieutenant in the 4th American Infantry. After 1843, upon graduation, Ulysses met his West Point classmates' sister, Julia Dent. Julia's parents were planters and traders. Grant had participated in the Mexican-American War, where he and Julia were separated. He misses her very much and often writes him letters. When the war ended, Odysseus returned to Missouri and married Julia. They were married in August 1848. Hi...... middle of paper ......ite his memoirs, to provide for his family. He was later diagnosed with throat cancer in 1884. The following year, on July 23, Ulysses died. He was spending the summer in the Adirondacks with his family. His friend Mark Twain published his memoirs. Both Ulysses and his wife were buried in New York's Riverside Park. During Odysseus' funeral procession, more than a million people were present to witness it. In conclusion, Ulysses S. Grant was a true epic hero. He helped end the Civil War, became the 18th President of the United States, contributed to freedmen's rights, was a national hero, and created our first national park. Without him we might still be the Union and the Confederates, or perhaps freedmen's rights would not be what they are today. He truly saved our country. Ulysses S. Grant is an epic hero, a great president and a great leader (at war or in the White House).).
