Essay / Racial Identity Issues During the Harlem Renaissance
The early 1900s were a very difficult time for black people, especially young women, who developed issues related to their identity. Their concerns came from the color of their skin. Either they were light-skinned due to mixed heritage, or they were simply dark-skinned. Young African American women have experienced racial identity issues that have caused them to find themselves in a constant struggle that prohibits them from loving themselves and the skin they are in. The aim of this article is to examine these issues in the context of selected creative literature. I will discuss different aspects of it and to facilitate my analysis, I will use the works of Nella Larsen from The Norton Anthology of African American Literature, Jessie Bennett Redmond Fauset and Wallace Brown. The Harlem Renaissance was a period of great renaissance for African-American people and, according to the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, the "Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement that spanned the 1920s and 1930s." Wikipedia also states that it was also known as the "Negro Movement, named after Alan Locke's 1925 anthology." Black people from all over America and the Caribbean flocked to Harlem, New York. Harlem has become a sort of “melting pot” for black America. Writers, artists, poets, musicians and dancers converged there for a rebirth. The Harlem Renaissance was also one of the most important chapters of the African American literary era. This literary period gave way to a new type of writing style. This style is known as “creative literature.” Creative literature allowed writers to express their thoughts and feelings on various issues important to African Americans.
