  • Essay / College Admission Essay for PhD in Geophysics

I am applying to the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Texas A&M University to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in Geophysics beginning in the Fall 2014 semester. I am interested in Reservoir Geophysics, particularly Rock Physics, AVO and the inversion of seismic data. I am excited by the prospect of conducting research and developing my technical skills in geophysics, and I think I would make an excellent doctoral student. My exposure in reservoir geophysics started since I took the course “Seismic Inversion for Reservoir Characterization” taught by Prof. .Dr. Ir. Sigit Sukmono, M.Sc. in my undergraduate degree. My undergraduate thesis topic is seismic inversion and multi-attribute seismic analysis. I completed my undergraduate research while completing an internship program at Chevron Pacific Indonesia in 2008, with the help of Professor Sigit as my supervisor. Later, I received a scholarship from my company in 2009 to obtain a dual degree master's program. The collaborative program includes one year of intensive study - for a MT degree - at the Geophysical Engineering Department of Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and additional semesters - for an MSC degree - at the Geophysical Exploration Department of Curtin University of Technology. After taking the course “Seismic Modeling and Amplitude Variation with Offset” taught by Professor Boris Gurevich at Curtin University, I became interested in rock physics. I wrote my master's thesis in Rock Physics and AVO Analysis, under the supervision of Professor Boris as supervisor. I currently work at the Upstream Technology Center (UTC), a division of PT's Upstream Directorate. Pertamina (PERSERO), an Indonesian state-owned energy company. As a specialist in geophysics... middle of article ...... research activity in this group during the many years of my PhD under the supervision of eminent researchers would yield valuable benefits for my career of researcher. Dr. Yuefeng Sun piqued my interest with his research focused on rock physics and fracture identification and characterization. Dr. Richard Gibson's research interests in reservoir characterization, anisotropy and imaging also led me to participate in his research group. Considering all these factors, I believe that Texas A&M University is the ideal location for my doctoral research and I am confident that I will make a positive contribution to the ongoing research work in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the Texas A&M University. looking forward to joining Texas A&M University as a future doctoral student in your esteemed department. Thank you for considering my application.
