Conformity has its ups and downs. Many people have made friends through conformity. But many others have fallen victim to mind control and death through conformity. In the story, "TheCrucible" Abigail was accused of being a witch. Abigail escaped being called a witch by blaming others. Before you know it, the whole town starts doing the same. A sign of compliance. When members of a society conform, it can affect them in many ways. Positively and negatively. The benefits of conforming are that people gather peacefully, you are less likely to get into trouble, and you will blend in with the crowd. The downsides of conformity are being judged, a chance of being murdered, and being somewhat forced to do things. The benefit of conforming is staying together in peace. At the beginning of “The Crucible,” the town was filled with Puritans who were friendly toward each other. There were some disagreements in the city but nothing at the moment that would cause great hysteria. They united according to Puritan beliefs. In an article we read, McCarthyism, the country worked together against communist supporters. In many ways, another benefit of compliance is that you're less likely to get into trouble. After Tituba confessed to being a witch, Abigail also confessed to dancing with the devil. Abigail knew that admitting what happened, even if it wasn't true, would get her out of trouble. Conformity can be accomplished in an act of kindness and someone simply trying to fit in to feel comfortable. Main reason people may dress a certain way, talk a certain way, etc… to fit in and make new friends. But when there is good, there is bad. One minute you're trying to fit into a group of people, the next minute you find yourself trying to murder someone just to stay in that group. Conformity helps some survive and kills others.
