According to McDonald's, its menu and target market have been expanded by introducing McCafe, a section of McDonald's that offers a range of coffees, desserts and fine pastries. According to McDonald's, McCafe sells 1 billion cups of coffee each year. Plastic is a material that many companies, including McDonald's, rely on, especially in packaging. The large quantities of plastic used and disposed of therefore make it a major environmental concern. Although McDoanld's focuses on responsible coffee sourcing, its coffee packaging is overlooked, particularly the plastic coffee cup lids. One CSR initiative that McDonalds can adopt is the use of bioplastic for the lids of its coffee cups. This means replacing commonly used petroleum-based plastic with plastic made from sugar cane. Brazil is the world leader in the production of biofuel derived from sugar cane and is now taking the lead in the production of bioplastic from this plant. Biopolymer companies such as Braskem can be used (used by other brands such as Woolworths), whereby non-renewable fossil polymers are replaced with a chemically and structurally identical plant-based alternative. It therefore offers the same quality of protection and can still be mixed with ordinary plastic, making it 100% recyclable. Why is this a good idea? It is renewable: sugarcane polyethylene is part of the Earth's natural environment. Therefore, plastic is made from a renewable source that can be continuously grown and replaced instead of using a limited resource such as coal or oil. Fully irrigated by rainwater – natural rainfall meets crop water needs, so large amounts of water is conserved. Calls for a lower carbon footprint – sugarcane leaves capture carbon dioxide of the atmosphere, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions, thus contributing to the fight against climate change. Each kg of sugarcane-based plastic produced by Braskem absorbs 2.78 kg of CO₂ from the atmosphere. Sugarcane can be produced all year round, making it a reliable and sustainable source. I think this initiative is one that McDonald's would find easy to adopt. since they have the means. Their marketing and advertising agency, Omnicom, is one of the world's leading advertising companies and has a marketing budget of approximately R132 million per year. Advertising this new CSR program will therefore pose no problem. Additionally, McDonald's main meat supplier (Marfrig Alimentos SA) is located in Brazil and therefore the company will already be aware of the different import taxes and exchange rates as they relate to trade with Brazil. Which program is the most sustainable? After extensive research into both programs being run by Nando's and McDonald's, it is evident that McDonald's efforts are proving to be more sustainable.
