    A career in nursing is a dedication to helping people who are sick and need care. To become a nurse, one must be qualified in health sciences and be able to have the patience to deal with all types of people. The nurses take a close look at their patience and check on them to make sure they are all well and receiving the best care the nurses could provide. To become a nurse, one must have strength, courage, dedication, motivation and a lot of hard work. As caretakers of children, family, and community, it was natural for women to be the nurses, the caregivers, as human society evolved. Nursing is perhaps the oldest known profession in the world. The Civil War provided enormous impetus for the construction of hospitals and the development of nursing as an accredited profession which led to greater respect for nurses, which Congresses recognized in 1872. Linda Richards was the first professionally trained nurse in the United States. Like most educational institutions at that time, the schools did not admit African Americans or informally educated black women who attended during the Civil War. The war marked the beginning of the profession's movement from the home to hospitals and clinics. “There was an explosion of nursing schools at the end of the 19th century. » (www.nwhm.org) Most schools were associated with the hospital.
