Gambling, card games, horse betting and other sports have always been an important activity in the mafia. They operated in luxury or illegal gambling operations throughout the United States; they paid law enforcement to ignore gambling operations. Over the years, the history of gambling and casinos has changed, particularly since 1931, when Nevada legalized gambling . For my final article, I particularly chose Casino as a classic mafia film that depicts an overview of the world or organizes crime and gambling. Casino is based on the story of Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal and the mob's takeover in Las Vegas. As noted in the Felt Top article, "This was the mob's most successful venture before the entire organization was dismantled by a little jerk named Anthony "the Ant" Spilatro who ran the gang with one hand of iron before meeting his fate in a cornfield in Indiana” (www.gamemasteronline.com). Casino depicts the greed, deception, money, power and murder that took place between two mafia best friends, Ace and Nicky, over a gambling empire. The film's opening began with " But at night you couldn't see the dessert surrounding it. Las Vegas. But it is in the desert that many of the city's problems are solved. There are a lot of holes in the dessert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. Except you have to do it correctly” (Casino, 1995). This quote stuck with me from the beginning and by the end of the film, I felt like it summed up the entire film. Vegas casinos are the winners and players don't stand a chance. The bosses give the orders and the leader does all the work, all that matters to the bosses is only making money. The best insurance policy these men can do is keep middle of paper... government officials and angry mob bosses are breaking up piece by piece. Sam played by the rules and kept a low profile while Ginger and Nicky let power and greed take over. They lied, cheated and stole to get to the top, they didn't care who they threw under the bus, all that was important was living an extravagant lifestyle of wealth and power. Ultimately, the bosses will do whatever it takes to keep the tradition of old-school gangsters alive. Eventually, these members enjoy this lifestyle too much and let all the power and money get into their heads. Deception and corruption play a huge role in the film as no one can trust each other and holes in the dessert hang over their heads. The film did a good job of showing the corruption in the inner workings of Las Vegas and exposing the crime and punishment that comes with it..
