Essay / To Kill a Mockingbird: Discrimination - 889
Discrimination is prevalent in the story "To Kill a Mockingbird", the most obvious being the excessive amount of racism (Lee). Racism is the easiest to see, but there are more forms of discrimination (Lee). Boo Radley is ostracized from the community even though no one really knows him (Lee). People discriminate against Scout because he is a tomboy and not a lady (Lee). The last thing anyone thinks about is how reverse racism is perceived when people threaten Atticus for defending Tom Robinson in court (Lee). Discrimination in all its forms is a controversial topic, but everyone knows that it is not right to discriminate against people. Racism is still a very controversial topic in today's society, but it's still not as bad as it was during the time of "To Kill a Mockingbird." Tom Robinson is put on trial because the word of a white man trumps the word of a black man (Lee). Bob Ewell told the town sheriff that Tom Robinson raped his daughter, which is a lie (Lee). The real story is that his daughter Mayella asked Tom to get her something she couldn't reach and when he did, she came to him (Lee). When this happened, Bob Ewell looked out the window and then Tom Robinson ran, making him (Lee) look guilty. Tom Robinson is ultimately convicted of rape because the jury in that era is corrupt because almost everyone in that era was racist (Lee). Recently in the news, Clippers owner Donald Sterling was banned from the NBA for life due to racist remarks he made in a voice recording (Chappell). Events like this still happen and still cause problems in today's society, although much has been done to try to make things equal between the races since "To Kill a Mockingbird" was written . In the story, there are many...... middle of paper... not as common today as in "To Kill a Mockingbird". Ostracizing someone in a community because they are not normal is common both in the book and today. Discrimination is in no way a good thing. Everyone tries not to discriminate, but sometimes we can't help it. It is human nature to have an opinion and when something goes against that opinion it usually leads to discrimination against someone or something. Works Cited Chappell, Bill.
