  • Essay / Gregor's reflection on society through his metamorphosis

The Metamorphosis is a short story written by Franz Kafka in 1912. The main character, Gregor, who undergoes a metamorphosis, is a victim for the rest of his life as an insect . Although it wasn't his fault in the first place that he became a vermin, he deals with it as best he can; however, this is not the case with his family. The more Gregor isolates himself from home, the better he becomes. He psychologically distances himself from others, hides under his couch and hopes he can reverse the metamorphosis and return to his old self. But over time, Gregor stops fighting his inner struggle and accepts the fact that he is no longer part of the human race, which pushes him to remember memories. Then, he finally realizes that the more he worked for the family, the less he was loved; he didn't spend quality time with them, but he was always expected to bring home money and work harder and harder, beyond his limits, which he mentions at the beginning of the news: “The other street vendors live like harem women. For example, when I return to the inn in the morning to write the necessary orders, these gentlemen are sitting down to lunch. If I were to try this with my boss, I would be fired” (3). Through his transformation into a hideous creature, that is to say a poisonous insect, Gregor becomes more like the rest of his entourage and his metamorphosis depicts the failure of humanity since he becomes, in many ways, more human than the rest of his family, while at the same time changing his way of life to that of vermin. “One morning, when Gregor Samsa awoke from anxious dreams, he discovered that in his bed he found himself transformed into a gigantic insect” (1). The opening......middle of paper......and above all, not appreciated. Maybe not even liked it. Although he hoped for a better future once he paid off his parents' debts, to finally do something for himself and possibly make a name for himself, the metamorphosis he experienced was a blessing in disguise. Although he has been tortured and hurt in so many different ways, Gregor finally has the opportunity to see the way he has been treated from another perspective and has learned that not everything is as good as it seems . Chances are he probably would have paid off the debt, but he would still have to continue to take care of his family financially, never achieving his goal or the desire that the woman in the fur boa represented for him. And although Gregor did not physically resemble a human being at the end of his short life, he still showed more humanity, care and dignity than society did towards him..
