Essay / Crowdsourcing - 723
Crowdsourcing is a term coined by Jeff Howe, a writer for Wired magazine, in one of his famous articles "The Rise of Crowdsourcing" in 2006. He defines the term as "the act of 'accepting a job in the traditional way'. carried out by a designated agent (usually an employee) and contracted out to an undefined, usually large, group of people in the form of an open call” (Howe). Today, businesses use crowdsourcing as a tool to receive consumer feedback on their ideas and products. This has brought many benefits to society, including the discovery of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370; but also has disadvantages in terms of its operation. Businesses and corporations use crowdsourcing to target what their consumers want and the products they are interested in. It outsources information and ideas to the public to receive feedback on certain issues, products and participation. It is known for “serving business goals, improving public participation in governance, designing products, and solving problems” (Sloane 15). Crowdsourcing can be used for everything from product ideas to finding help for two hikers in the mountains of Peru. A more recent example of a crowdsourcing event is people's request to search satellite images to find where Malaysian planes might be. DigitalGlobe is a Colorado company that owns and operates an advanced satellite network. After the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, the companies asked for the public's help in locating images of possible debris from the plane. CNN reported that the search for the plane was an Internet phenomenon. DigitalGlobe took photos "400 miles above the Gulf of Thailand [that] capture detail as small as a marble" (CNN). The company recruited the public to sell paper products and allow the public to vote whether they would purchase the item or not. Using crowdsourcing allows the company to save time and money. Additionally, crowdsourcing has had an impact on our society. Amber Alert is an emergency response system that sends information about a missing child via media broadcast. The public can use this information to inform police of any information regarding the kidnapping. The recently coined term “crowdsourcing” has had a significant impact in today's society, from the world of advertising and business to the world of law enforcement. This gives individuals the opportunity to freely express their opinion about a product or use ideas to create new products. It has also changed the way individuals involved in disastrous events are traced via satellite images. Even though crowdsourcing has advantages and disadvantages, it has a positive impact on society today...
