    Just like we saw in Meier, the teacher who has a limited understanding of a student's individual personality and needs in a special education program often results in reprimanding the student. Robert was suspended several times, when he was just copying the behavior of the other children, he did not understand the connotation of the words he was using. Like Robert, the boy Jay describes in Broderick's text is another mainstream student, who adopts inappropriate defensive language when verbally attacked by another student. The teacher cannot be everywhere at once and only hears obscenity; in an attempt to regain control, he uses the same ineffective punishment system that he would use against other students. This is a common “social interpretation,” as Broderick describes it, or a misinterpretation of student interaction that ignores the conversational context. Differentiated instruction is proposed as part of the solution to inequality, neglect of diversity, and exclusion in American schools (196). Although a somewhat preachy conclusion about democracy didn't appeal to me, Broderick and his colleagues make an incredibly valuable suggestion that standardization of education fails all educational programs. At my school site, when students who are usually separated are integrated into
