Nixon had been installed as the 37th president, but he created such a scandal with Watergate that he resigned shortly afterward and allowed Vice President Gerald Ford to succeed him during his disgraceful leave of absence. The United States had decided to hold a second lottery to find men to serve in the upcoming Vietnam War. This meant that the Selective Service System would hold a lottery-like situation drawing both a sequence number and a date to select the next men serving in the war. A fatal event occurred when Senator Edward M. Kennedy was in a car accident with Mary Jo Kopechne. He accidentally left a bridge and ended up in a tidal canal. He swam free and Mary died in the car. Kennedy did not report this incident and was prosecuted and sentenced to two months in prison. Culture had become a single establishment. Fashion evolved into what is known as hippie clothing, also known as long hair, blue jeans, and bright, psychedelic colors. Pop art became a hit with the image of Marilyn Monroe designed by Andy Warhol. The sport was booming with the action. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in the first ever Super Bowl. Even the government has decided to embark on the new decade. The act of requiring all new cars to be equipped with seat belts. The most memorable moment of the decade was the Apollo 11 moon landing. This event ended the decade and paved the way for new inventions and benefits in the 70s. Astronauts Neil Alden Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins worked for many years with NASA to be the first men to travel to and from the Moon.
