  • Essay / The joys of finance - 658

How can finance help cure depression? This question may seem absurd at first glance, but I find that the logic behind finance actually helps me treat my depression. I was a perfectionist who tried to take control of my future and couldn't tolerate even the slightest failure. Even though I performed well in most cases, I always paid more attention to what I didn't achieve. Meetings with psychotherapists did not treat my depression well because these sentimental psychological theories could hardly convince me until I came across finance, whose raw numbers and rational logic convinced me much more. The most impressive example is the concept of Sunk Cost. It taught me that whatever I failed to achieve in the past, that should no longer worry me and I should focus on the current conditions and make the wisest decisions possible from the present moment. Other concepts such as NPV also offer me completely new perspectives to view my life in a more optimistic way. Finance becomes more interesting when I am able to see beyond the finance itself. By connecting finance to my situation, I learned more about how to live a happier life, which gives me more enjoyment at work. Fascination with numbers Perhaps my total fascination with numbers predestined my passion for finance. I love being able to see the facts, whether it's a specific company or the entire market, through the calculations and interpretation of financial reports. This is why I chose accounting, a much more demanding discipline than business administration, as my concentration during my undergraduate studies. Accounting is the basis of any financial activity and it provides me with a strong background in understanding different activities like...... middle of paper ...... Although I taught myself advanced calculus , intermediate statistics and basic computer science during my undergraduate years, I feel that I still need a systematic learning experience. I believe that MIT's Master's in Finance program will be a vital connection between my background and my career goals. In particular, the program will equip me with integrated expertise in accounting, finance, economics, computer science and mathematics in high demand in the modern financial sector. Additionally, MIT demonstrates its motto, mens et manus, by allowing students to apply what they learn in the classroom to the real world through numerous internship opportunities. Given the valuable resources offered by the Master of Finance program, I believe that my education at MIT will not be limited to just a tool for advancement, but also a life lesson that will benefit me forever..
