    When Vladek received supplies from the Kapo he was teaching, he decided to help another prisoner, Mandelbaum, who was down on his luck and was miserable. Vladek brought him a spoon that had been stolen from him, a belt for his pants that he always had to hold with his hand, and shoes that really fit him. Anja noticed her supervisor had a worn boot while she was being kicked. When Anja mentioned that her husband was a shoemaker and that the Gestapo had his boots repaired, Anja was treated much better (“Volume II,”
