These lines are just one of many spectacular passages in the comedy. Here, Dante was able to stir up controversy among readers and caused many people to think, analyze, and offer their interpretations. This could simply be due to Dante's kindness in describing his surroundings while he was blinded by Virgil's hands. He set up the scenario for the reader to allegorize his words. On the other hand, he probably just wanted to alert the reader to the obscure words, but he nonetheless urges them to “observe the teaching” behind his verses. Another view which illustrates in some way a religious aspect of the scene. There are many interpretations but regardless of how one might perceive these verses, Dante truly leaves a dottrina among humans who have had the pleasure of reading his Divine.
