Judaism is a distinct religion practiced in many countries, but the majority of Jews reside in the United States and Israel. This specific religion is usually a common topic in many history classes due to the many historical events that occur during the rise of Judaism. Sometimes certain religions, such as Judaism, can cause heated discussions in class depending on the person and their beliefs. Although it is common for people to know about historical events in Judaism, there are other important central themes involved in this religion. The history of a particular religion is always of great interest because it is important to know how it all began. Judaism developed thousands of years ago and is believed to have originated in the eastern region of Canaan, which today would be considered part of Israel. The important concept to know about history is that it dates back to the time of the prophets, called Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Moses. Abraham is a prominent prophet because he was the one who began sharing his belief that there was only one God. This is how Judaism began as a monotheistic religion, of which Judaism is actually said to be the first monotheistic religion. Isaac was Abraham's only son who was to be sacrificed according to God's commandments, but was later saved because it was a test of Abraham's faith and trust in God. These prophets were also known as the children of Israel, or in other words, considered the people of God. Eventually, the Hebrews, who are the ancestors of the Jews, were enslaved in Egypt; however, the Egyptians were hit by epidemics and the Hebrews were able to escape.
