  • Essay / The importance of sleep - 2296

Sleep is an essential part of life. The body's many different functions depend on sleep to recharge and grow. Various types of sleep disorders and parasomnias can interfere with sleep, leaving a person lethargic and sluggish. Many people live with sleep disorders that go untreated or undiagnosed, while others suffer from these disorders and are unable to get a good night's sleep. Sleep disorders affect many people and can be easily treated. Other types of sleep disorders can occur or be experienced without affecting life. However, it is important to treat serious disorders to prevent sleep deprivation. The brain and body function differently during sleep than when awake. During sleep, energy is replenished and energy-efficient organs repair themselves in the body. The brain moves new information into more permanent memory and the cerebral cortex shuts down during slow-wave sleep (Brynie, 16). The frontal lobe is part of the cerebral cortex and is the region of the brain most active during waking hours. It is also the part of the brain that is dedicated to reasoning and decision-making. A night without sleep will harm performance in comprehension, concentration, creativity and problem solving. Sleep is extremely important for the body and without it the body cannot function properly. The body and brain's roles during sleep are essential to repair and restore energy, create memories, and regenerate to function properly for another day's work. Sleep is especially important for fighting disease and for children to grow and develop. Between the ages of five and seven, children develop REM and non-REM behaviors as adults. It's because they start school...... middle of paper ......uh. Narcolepsy is characterized by sudden and unpredictable bouts of sleep. It starts with brief periods of deep sleep, moving straight into REM sleep and skipping stages one through four. A person with narcolepsy will have vivid hallucinations and temporary paralysis just before falling asleep and waking up. They may also experience strong emotions. Narcolepsy cannot be cured, but there are stimulant medications to promote wakefulness. Naps can help relieve fatigue, and certain medications can suppress REM sleep. REM sleep disorders, such as sleep behavior disorders (RBD), may also need to be treated with medication. RBD occurs when a character experiences their dreams due to normal REM sleep paralysis not occurring. One will lose muscle control and will hit, run, jump and kick. Treatment for RBD includes anticonvulsant medications that will relieve RBD symptoms if they are severe.
