    The automobile manufacturer has been in business for seventy-nine years. So when headlines broke claiming that the company had knowingly falsified a large number of emissions tests conducted in the United States, many couldn't believe what they were hearing. The company was responding to the wants and needs of the American people by giving them what they thought was the fuel-efficient, low-emission car of their dreams. The problem was that they didn't want to raise the price of a popular car (that would lead to fewer sales), so they chose to create a "defeat device." Every time this device was connected to the emissions test it could detect the computer and would then go into safe mode which would read as it is supposed to. As soon as the test was finished and the car was back on the road, that's when the problem occurred, the car would immediately come out of this "safe mode" and then let the oxide escape nitrogen (40 times more than allowed). The saddest part of the story is that if they had not been caught in the act, the car manufacturer would not have announced their misdeeds. They quickly apologized to the public and made repairs as quickly as possible, but that doesn't change the fact that not only have people lost faith in the company, but many are wondering if it is 'a problem in other car manufacturers (Hotten
