Essay / The importance of immigration and the refugee population
I think that those who are part of this population are hesitant to want to receive services, due to their safety. Even though they are legal immigrants, there are still people in America who disagree that they should be here or even work in the United States (Gelfand, 1989). I believe that if they are working, they are trying to make a difference for their families and deserve the rights that we have as Americans. I think case managers need to be aware of cultural needs and barriers. A common language could simply be language. Knowing the language is very important and allows you to understand on a more cultural and anthropological level where they come from and their needs. I think society is overwhelmingly against social workers in favor of helping this population because they have never experienced it. Most people are afraid of what they don't know, so while case managers can't do much to necessarily "change" government policies or attitudes, we could at least think about ways to advocate for a better lifestyle. Have a mutual understanding that we are all human beings who have basic needs and that there are people who do not meet them. So maybe society would be on the same page as social workers.
