  • Essay / Curious, Not Curious: A Soldier's Welcome Home - 2280

It was Christmas time in New York when a plane landed at the airport with a special package. Many families have been impatiently awaiting this moment since the day the packages left; they were absolutely ready to receive their packages with open arms again. Once they laid eyes on their special packages, tears of joy flowed and hugs quickly followed. These families waited and finally saw their beloved loved ones return home after serving in the armed forces. Everything was perfect in the eyes of all the families present at the airport. After the soldiers returned, the citizens of New York held many special celebrations due to the soldiers' return. They thanked them for their service through banners, celebrations, ceremonies and parties. However, this feeling would soon disappear as quickly as it grew. At that time, I was a rookie in the detective agency. It was my first year in the field, but I was a troublemaker. I was always curious, and often found myself digging through hidden files and confidential documents. I got caught several times by my boss, Shucks. Shucks was a man who played by the rules. He strictly followed the rules and did everything routinely and precisely. He was a superstitious man, who had to do the same routine to get a good result. Shucks handled all investigative files in a certain way, which always began with the caller receiving the file. Then, according to him, a certain chain of events must occur in a certain order for the case to succeed. He never questioned what his superiors said and expected the same from me and my colleagues. It never seemed like he liked me because of my status as, as he called it, curious, and that became evident during my first mission. It was December...... middle of paper...... ear. “Are you feeling better, Collin?” You seem to be breathing easier, Pop said. I laughed. “Yeah, that looks like it.” I can't wait for the next mission. Pop let out a laugh, "Call me when you get another one, Collin." He walked to his car, said goodbye and left. Now it was just me and Shucks. We walked silently towards the car. He started the car and returned to the agency. As we neared our destination, Shucks admitted, “Collin, I was a little hard on you at first, but you really succeeded on this mission. I owe you an apology, rookie. I take back what I said about you being curious. I actually think curious and curious are the right adjectives this time. Recruit, don't change; Don't make me change my mind about your curious personality. We need more people like you, Collin. Don't be surprised if you get a call soon and don't forget to answer the phone”
