  • Essay / Benefits of Unarranged Marriage - 1024

Only about 50% of unarranged marriages are actually successful in the United States, which is a number to be nothing to be proud of. In an article, Aviva Patz reports on a study on marriage by Ted Huston, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Huston noted that couples who remained married after a certain allotted time were more likely to engage in a “working partnership” than a “romantic relationship” (Patz 1177). Instead of learning to love in order to know your partner better on an intimate level, paying less rent together has become a survival strategy. Furthermore, Huston believed that our culture was responsible for our own mistakes and expressed his thoughts on how we further doom our relationships by believing in storybook romance (Patz 1178). In terms of happiness, today, more and more married couples in Asia seem happier than before because they now have the option to say "no" and choose another spouse. However, choosing another spouse does not guarantee that the outcome will be positive. Furthermore, unarranged marriages in the United States are gradually becoming more durable than before. With couples now getting married in their late 20s, they are showing signs of maturation and couples are showing more signs of maturity.
