  • Essay / Analysis of the Lord, I have only come to dig deep - 1002

Most of the time, you have to take them apart one by one and look at each detail as if you're creating "the big picture", because you are. In “Lord of the Flies” and “I Only Came to Use the Telephone,” this process is crucial. These stories have many hidden meanings. So to understand this, the reader must answer it, quote by quote. First, in Lord of the Flies it says: "Jack began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty growl." This is one of the first quotes to show the reader the dehumanization that occurs among boys. One of the factors that makes this obvious to the public is that "his laughter turned into a bloodthirsty snarl." This not only shows dehumanization, but also that boys are no longer able to imitate society. Their actions become something that is no longer acceptable. Later, the boys all say, "Kill the pig! Cut its throat! Kill the pig! Hit it!" It's like the island is starting to affect the boys mentally and physically. They all become "bloodthirsty", as if they were animals. Presumably they see the independence Jack has developed through his new behavior, so they unwittingly begin to change with him. They no longer had the option of keeping up with those in society, so they began the process of dehumanization at the first sight of a new way of doing things. Also, in I Only Came to Use the Phone it says, "She had no idea how long she had slept." or what part of the world they had arrived in. Her neighbor seemed vigilant. It's obvious that Maria is the only person who is quite confused... middle of paper...... heh. As the story continues, he loses hope in reality and stops nurturing it. He eventually came to the conclusion that the relationship was no longer salvageable. When he returned the cat, it was showing that he had finally let go of the relationship completely. He no longer had the energy to continue feeding something that was almost already dead. So you can see that when reading a story, the meanings are much deeper than one might expect. Either they are hidden very far from each other, or they are so close that it is difficult to believe them. As the reader continues to analyze each quote, the meaning or theme is much easier to understand. In these two stories the meaning is similar, but shown in different ways. The way Maria was transformed by the sanitarium and the way the boys were transformed by the island really show us how important a theme is to the meaning of the story..
