Essay / The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart - 1039
The Dice Man by Luke RhinehartThe Dice Man written by Luke Rhinehart is an incredibly thought-provoking and intentionally provocative piece that knows no bounds and seeks to cover all aspects of the human psyche . The exploratory nature of this book traverses topics that most novels and authors would not dare tackle. Rape, murder, sexual experimentation, racism, drug use, adultery and senseless blasphemy. The Dice Man covers them all, and when presented with the title quote "This book will change your life", I would wholeheartedly agree and argue that it will not only change your life in one way or another. another, but will seriously change your perspective on things. The novel tells the story of a psychiatrist named Luke Rhinehart who, feeling bored and dissatisfied with life, makes a conscious decision to let a roll of the dice dictate things in his life. Each decision Rhinehart faces has 6 new options, one option for each side of the die. Simple judgments such as “Should I brush my teeth now or in 10 minutes?” and “Do I play with my children?” Or trying to seduce my wife' were all left to chance or, as Rhinehart puts it, "the roll of the dice." Written in the first, second and third person, differing from chapter to chapter, the novel - He Becomes a Parent - is also decided by the whim of the dice. What bits of the story to include, what perspective to take during a chapter, and even what writing style to include when describing certain scenes (articles, criminal statements, fan mail, etc.) The novel progresses at a rapid pace and the irregular pace can be compared to that of a novel about drug addiction. As if the author himself, in certain chapters of the book, had decided to “shoot himself” before typing on his keyboard. In the other direction, the n...... middle of paper ...... also do this with my existential beliefs? Could I eliminate my cognitive thinking to blindly follow a religion like Diceliving had become for many characters in Luke's life. Satan, Buddha, God, Allah, Mick Jagger. This novel made me wonder if religion is the elimination of the self or if religion is actually food for the ego of that self. Overall the novel, as the title page says, "this book will change your life", and makes you think about things. and in a way, you’ve never done it before. Luke Rhinehart stayed true to his goal throughout and did whatever the dice called for, showing true dedication to a cause that threw the world into chaos. “In the beginning it was chance, and chance was with God and chance was God. He was initially with God. All things were made by chance and without it nothing was made. In Chance was life and life was the light of men”
