Although writing is an extension of speech, it is not simply speech written on paper. Most people learn to speak or communicate in some way, but not everyone learns to read and write. Writing requires regular practice and is generally more formal than speaking. Spelling is a form of pronunciation of writing and is very critical in expressing meaning and ideas. Many words have silent letters that are obvious when written but are not heard when spoken. Additionally, throughout the English language, there are many words known as "homophones" that sound the same but are spelled differently and have distinct meanings. [Grellies and Goerke]. Even if speakers use pauses and intonation, correct grammar and punctuation are necessary and can often make the difference between well or poorly written work. Written work must be respectful of the reader. The writing should be clear and concise, considering what is essential for an audience to know about a given topic, the reader should not need to add additional details to understand what it is about.
