  • Essay / Converting the Umuofia people to Christianity in things...

There are many different religions in the world but they are all capable of doing similar things. Religion plays an important role in the book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. In this book, religion is important to the people of Umuofia, which is the village where the protagonist Okonkwo lives. The people of the village believed that there was only one religion and when another religion was presented to them, they did not believe in it. This religion was Christianity. Over the course of the novel, the power of religion guides and destroys Umuofia's society. First, the church refutes many Igbo superstitions, which encourages the Igbo to break the traditions they have followed for many years. Therefore, they are slowly destroying their society. For example, when the white men who brought Christianity to the people of Umuofia tell the village clan about their new religion. They are asking for land to build their church. The clan decides to give them a piece of land from the evil forest and let them stay. To the surprise of the clans, this happens. “At last the day came when all the missionaries should have died. But they were still alive, building a new red earth and thatched house for their teacher, Mr. Kiaga. That week, they gained a handful more converts.(151).” The Evil Forest was known as a forest where people went to die, and the clansmen believed that by allowing the missionaries to build their church in the Evil Forest, they could easily get rid of them. Since the white men did not die but lived, this caused the Igbo people to question their own beliefs. When some villagers realize that they have been misled by their gods, they decide to convert to Christianity. Either because Christianity seemed stronger than the middle of paper, he had adopted his religion and also said that our customs were bad. Christianity destroys and guides two different societies. This guides people who don't believe in Christianity to convert because converts who once had the same beliefs as them say their customs are wrong. This causes the Igbo to convert to Christianity, which guides Christian society in better directions as they gain more converts. At the same time, this is destroying the Igbo religion as they are losing their members to the Christian society. Religion has many effects in any society. He can either destroy him by proving the customs wrong or guide him as he guides converts to believe in religion. Religion creates two different societies and although it guides one to become stronger, it will destroy another at the same time. Religion guides societies and destroys them.
