  • Essay / The Five Factors of Humanity Theory and...

It is important to note how intriguing personality is and how central a role it plays in everyday life. The study of personality is by no means a recent phenomenon, quite the contrary: it is one of the oldest branches of psychology studied, dating back to Hippocrates. The field of personality psychology has grown significantly since then and continues to grow with a wealth of literature on how it interacts with other variables and more. What makes this universally relevant is that each individual has their own particular set of characteristics or psychological traits that define them. At the forefront of the study of personality are the five factors (also known as the Big Five) from which personality is drawn or condensed: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. Openness to experience can be described as the degree of creativity, intellectual curiosity, adventure, and appreciation of the arts. Conscientiousness refers to how organized, routine, and achievement-oriented a person is. Extroversion can be thought of as a person's degree of energy, openness and sociability, with the opposite end of the spectrum being introversion, referring to a person who prefers togetherness, is generally reserved and does not seek to be stimulated by the presence of others. The fourth factor, agreeableness, is quite simple, as it can be described as the extent to which an individual is cooperative, friendly, trusting, and helpful. The final factor, neuroticism, or emotional stability, refers to the tendency to experience negative emotions and how well one can control one's impulses. For this particular interpretation of personality, I will evaluate my personality according to a reliable criterion...... middle of paper ......ess. Essentially, the relationship between these particular personality traits suggests that I do not tend to engage in risky behaviors. Specifically, I consider myself immune to the role that high neuroticism plays in manifesting itself in extremely poor coping strategies, including alcohol and substance abuse. Along with the research, having great emotional stability allows me not to feel stress to the point of harming my health, thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, etc. Although the combination of these three particular traits suggests very good health behaviors, concerns remain when examining the interplay between high agreeableness and openness to experience. Being rich in both of these traits could possibly help with succumbing to peer pressure or being willing to try something “just once.” ».”.
