Essay / Ethics of Censorship Essay - 1963
How Censorship Can Be Used EthicallyThe action of censorship means examining a document in order to find and remove objectionable content. This law has been used by many different organizations, both governmental and religious, to help promote certain ideologies to the public. It has been one of the foundations of society since ancient times, making censorship and its institutional use a normal facet of life. Although, in some situations, censorship by government and religious institutions may be an acceptable means of protecting the public; but in most situations it is just manipulation by a deceptive elite trying to keep their ideologies in power. Throughout history, the use of information censorship, usually through control of the press, has been common. Although uncommon in the digital age, this form of censorship still exists. Countries like China, Russia, and North Korea use it prolifically in order to keep their populations ignorant of the ruling party's shortcomings (Chang 30 ). China, for example, has become politically notorious for its iron grip on all types of journalistic media. To implement this type of political blackout, the government had to create a specific government department, aptly named the Department of Publicity. This department, at first, censored only articles that it believed might incite riots or insurrection against the government. Over time, particularly in the 1990s and 2000s, this agency began to censor any type of political reaction. This increased control over the media is directly proportional to the appointment of Jiang Zemin as general secretary of the Communist Party (Chang 30). Zemin, with the help of the director of the publicity department Ding Guangen, ...... middle of the newspaper ...... speech and press ideas, and even the types of materials we are allowed to watch in movies, censorship is a hot topic of this generation. Yet many disagree on how censorship should be used, all agree that, as a fundamental form of society, it is necessary to protect the public. If government officials moved away from the complete control of material as in the past and instead moved towards a more age-restricted form of censorship, where material is only available to the public upon reaching a certain age and by purchasing it themselves or with parental consent. , perhaps this institute of civilization can finally be used in an ethical and protective sense of freedom. A politics where the people, not elected officials, got to decide what they were mature enough to experience, a politics where censorship was used in a moral sense rather than as a means of keeping alive the ideals of officials in power..
