Essay / The stupidest generation? I don't think so. - 624
People under thirty are not stupid because time can be used more efficiently thanks to the technology of the modern age. People today don't need to read chapters of a book to find the answer to a question. Students in the modern age can work much faster with the use of technology, giving people much more free time to play video games or spend time on their iPhones. Millennials have an advantage over the older generation because the younger generation has grown up with technology at their fingertips and have learned to use the Internet and its information effectively to solve current problems by thinking critically. The use of technology has not made people dumber, but has made everyone think differently. The fact that the majority of people turn to the Internet to find facts does not make those facts any less valuable than if they were found in a book. Today, people process a lot more information than before because technology has increased the amount of information that can be accessed. Thanks to the Internet, people have access to much more information. “Since the 1930s, IQ scores have increased” (Begley) With the rise of technology, IQ scores have increased. How can technology make us stupid? With new technologies like video games, brains have been trained to process massive amounts of information simultaneously. Some people say that video games make people stupid, but other studies have proven that video games increase brain dexterity. (Johnson) Older generations say that millennials don't read enough, but they don't take into account that the younger generation reads step-by-step tutorials to complete a game like Grand Theft Auto III. In the tutorial, there...... middle of paper ...... by today's young people are on the Internet. Why spend time going to the library, or spend money buying a magazine when the same item is free on the Internet. Using the Internet doesn't make us stupid. This is an advantage that the older generation did not have. The fact that the older generation blames us for using the Internet is reckless and stupid. Why not use a tool provided to us. It's like someone was given a hammer to drive a nail into a wall, but we don't use the hammer, it's stupid. Before criticizing a generation, know that things are changing. If you can't adapt, you won't survive. Being able to adapt is key to survival, whether it's school or survival. Works Cited Shea, Renée Hausmann, Lawrence Scanlon and Robin Dissin Aufses.
