  • Essay / History of Games - 1396

We can imagine that games have been played throughout human history. Starting as soon as there was a moment of leisure not devoted to survival; as soon as communication between individuals has gone beyond the simple transmission of needs and elementary movements, to enter the domain of invention and ideas. It is a fact that babies and their parents play games from the first months of life, starting with hide-and-seek and cake patting to the game of hide-and-seek as early as a toddler is mobile. Games seem to be part of our nature, probably because they serve a useful purpose (learning strategic thinking) while also being fun. Basically, board games are divided into three types of games: luck, strategy and knowledge. Luck-based board games are usually controlled by dice. The winner is usually determined by whoever can luckily roll the desired number on the dice. Strategy games, on the other hand, are a game of intelligence, skill and logic. People who excel and play haphazardly will not change their skills in any way. There are also games that require the player to know certain topics like quiz masters and scrabble. Then there are board games which require not only luck but also strategy in all aspects of the game. Board games probably originated in Egypt and the Fertile Crescent before spreading to others regions. India and China also had board games early on, but the exact dates of creation remain unknown. Board games didn't even reach Britain until the very end of the first century BC, they spread around the Mediterranean before reaching the Roman Empire and what is now Europe .
