Essay / Georges Seurat's Pointillism - 1550
Georges-Pierre Seurat was a French post-impressionist painter, as well as an excellent draftsman. He was born and raised in a wealthy family in Paris on December 2, 1859. He lived a short life of thirty-one years, and during his time Seurat not only invented his style of pointillism, but also became the first Neo-Impressionist. In pointillism, Seurat used tiny dots of different colors on a base color to produce local color. This creates an optical blend from a distance for the viewer and makes the image more vivid. As an early Neo-Impressionist, he systematically painted his works in place of the crude brushstrokes of earlier Impressionists (Chu 410-411, Gage 452, Georges). Since Seurat first became interested in the arts when he was just sixteen years old, he has truly changed the world of modern art in 15 years; barely half his life! Seurat really worked hard to gain the reputation he has today and his works are undoubtedly phenomenal thanks to the techniques he used. A good example of his systematic approach is his painting of Le Chahut (Fig. 1) which shows various repeating, geometric and symmetrical forms. shapes as well as the use of color theory. The four dancers all have the same repeating position with their legs equally and symmetrically separated at an equal angle of 45° to be exact for its geometric structure, and they move in the same direction at the top left. The dancers' faces are also repetitively tilted in the same upward and left direction as the legs. The dancers have similar geometric folds and curves in their clothing. There are also repeated lights across the top of the painting as well as the use of diagonal lines that sweep upwards towards the top corners and sides of the painting. As shown in the figure images... middle of paper ...... he combined his range of post-impressionist work and craftsmanship with the art of pointillism and became the founding father of neo-impressionism . There is no precise explanation for the death of this revolutionary, but in his death he opened a door for all other future artists in the world (George).Works Cited Chu, Petra ten. 19th century European art. 3rd ed.
