  • Essay / Analyzing McCarthyism as Depicted in the Political Cartoon

This political cartoon shows the Committee on Un-American Activities driving recklessly through the streets, clearly not caring about running over people. The chaos is evident, the face with all the stolen papers everywhere, the parking meters falling and people's general looks of terror. This cartoon attempts to show that Joseph McCarthy's committee was wreaking havoc on the American population and would stop at nothing. This appears to be true since it was around this time that McCarthy began accusing individuals in Hollywood (writers, directors, actors, etc.). He directly attacked American icons known throughout the world. Some of those accused of being communists included Charlie Chaplin, Arthur Miller, Langston Hughes and Orson Welles. This is analogous to the book The Crucible, as in the book the court began to accuse several very reputable people such as Rebecca Nurse, Martha Corey, and John Proctor of witchcraft and had them hanged. This scared a lot of people because these were people that the townspeople respected and admired, who were well-liked and had influence in the town. Reverend Parris fears that if they are hanged, the locals will rebel and overthrow the courts. He has already seen the city turn against him; he found a knife stuck in his door that morning. He fears that the locals will finally have enough of the hangings and will stage a rebellion, which could be dangerous for him. Say no to plagiarism.
