  • Essay / The Ethics of Ethical Dilemmas Related to Passive Smoking

Over the years, the ethical concerns surrounding passive smoking have been the subject of much debate. Inhaling second-hand smoke is an inevitable consequence of the presence of smokers, exposing non-smokers to the same harmful chemicals as those who voluntarily engage in smoking. While recognizing the selfish nature of passive smoking, governments in various countries such as Singapore have implemented anti-smoking laws that prohibit smokers from smoking in certain public places (“Smoking Ban”, 2013). However, there are many outdoor spaces that the government cannot ban either, indicating that the ethical issues surrounding smoke from smoking cannot be eliminated. The introduction of electronic cigarettes was aimed at reducing health risks for smokers, unlike conventional cigarettes. Cigarettes, e-cigarettes, do not contain tobacco. One benefit widely praised by consumers is that e-cigarettes produce no second-hand smoke, as they emit vapor instead of ash, tar and smoke, which contain tobacco byproducts. In this case, e-cigarette users have the freedom to smoke in more public places without violating their personal right to fresh air. The good ethics of non-smokers will not be violated since the introduction of electronic cigarettes eliminates the question of the right to breathe clean air. Although e-cigarettes have the potential to reduce health consequences for users themselves and the public, there is significant concern that the nature of e-cigarettes may cause non-smokers to begin engaging in such addictive behavior. . Currently, there is limited information and testing on the levels of nicotine and other chemicals that e-cigarettes impose on users and the public. So, food... middle of paper ... conventional cigarettes could give people the impression that e-cigarettes are just as harmful as conventional cigarettes, thereby affecting their sales. However, as noted previously, e-cigarettes indirectly pose many potential concerns to the public. Therefore, although e-cigarettes have the potential to help smokers manage their addiction, a strong regulatory framework is needed to control potential problems. The proposed actions could be implemented to eliminate the pressing concerns that accompany the use of e-cigarettes. That being said, before the FDA confirms that e-cigarettes are safe, regulatory agencies should completely restrict e-cigarette sales. The sale of electronic cigarettes should also only be allowed if manufacturers can prove that they are not only safe, but also able to help smokers quit smoking..
