American education produces ineffective students because students are not treated like the young adults they are. In order to help students, education must help them develop their talents and must be unreserved in its praise and criticism of their bright future. In "GenerationMe" (Twenge, 482) mentioned by Twenge, people are raised to think highly of themselves and think that they can do anything if they put their mind to it. For example, even if they get Ds on their math exams, teachers will still praise them and students will think they did a great job. Raised in a very sheltered environment, they believe they are the best and will make no effort to develop their innate talents. Twenge says: “He argues that self-esteem based on nothing does not serve children well in the long run; it is better, he says, for children to develop real skills and feel good about accomplishing something” (486). The problem with American education is that it doesn't care about each student's major. One student may have talents in cooking and another student may have talents in sports. A better education system would discover their talents as early as possible and help them develop their abilities and students would be able to shape a prosperous future. With this method, America would be able to breed remarkable individuals and America would be able to achieve its maximum efficiency by having a large number of talented people. However, some problems exist in changing the current education system. This education system has worked for a long time and America doesn't think it needs to be changed. Many members of Congress may have been trained during “GenMe” and will oppose such changes. Faludi says: “Go back to the middle of a paper……used on self-esteem. He always praises them even if they do something wrong and only uses positive words to avoid hurting them. However, this is wrong because they could have achieved maximum effectiveness by teaching them to be more independent and helping them find a way to improve their talents. Students don't know the real society and working environment, or even their college life, because the school doesn't give them the opportunity to learn about them. They don't know what they should do and even forget what they are doing. The American education system should focus more on the idea of independence than on self-esteem. This way, even though the school cannot focus on each individual, it can help students decide about their lives after graduation. As a result, school, society, and America will achieve true effectiveness.
