Before this project, I knew nothing about Title IX other than what we briefly discussed in class. After group and individual research, I was surprised to see the magnitude of the impact of this law. Personally, I was assigned the sports section of Title IX, which I found extremely interesting. Title IX has come a long way, and that being said, there is still much to accomplish. Since the law's passage, Title IX has made competitive sports for women (who enjoy playing sports just as much as male athletes) easier to access than ever before. Financial aid is now provided at the college level (scholarships), access to facilities, trainers and equipment is readily available, and participation is available almost nationwide. Believe it or not, it has only been in the last 20-30 years that this has been recognized nationally. Many claim that Title IX harms men's sports because of the forced 50/50 split between scholarships and access to equipment, but that is not true. Personally, it seems obvious to me that these figures being true, previous years show the lack of opportunities for women. A common argument against Title IX is that female athletes do not deserve all that is given to them because they do not enjoy their sport as much as male athletes. If these numbers don't give you an obvious answer to this argument, you may need to do further research. Another myth I discovered about this law is that "people don't support Title IX." Our nation is supposed to stand for equality, even though for many groups of people, equality is not truly equality, our nation is improving because of those who are willing to make a change. With the passage of laws like Title IX, equality seems like something we, as a society, can achieve. Working with the group I had was a great experience, I learned about all aspects of Title IX from education to sexual assault to the section I researched, sports . As a group, our strength lay in our good communication. We started a group text where everyone was extremely engaged and no one was difficult. We planned to meet at the library at several different times to get organized and on the same page. At each meeting, almost our entire group was present. Everyone understood the concept behind Title IX, which made me feel comfortable presenting with the group I had. One of our weaknesses was that we started this project without knowing each other personally. During the course of completing this project, we as a group got to know each other and learned what to expect from each other. For the first two weeks or so, that wasn't true. We struggled to find a rhythm and stay organized, which made me and everyone else nervous.
