Essay / Case Study of Justine's Case - 1656
A cultural misunderstanding and lack of communication between Dr. Brown and Arturo's mother led to his overdose and almost led to his death. Arturo's medical problems were clouded by a cultural misunderstanding and miscommunication on the part of Dr. Brown, writing the medical prescription that means one thing in English and totally one thing in Spanish, leading the mother to Arturo to make him take more pills than necessary, in order to make up for the days he missed taking the pills.2. Two cultural skills in this care are negotiations, to enable and broaden our perspective to see different options and different approaches and actions, adapting practical skills to the cultural context of the client. Dr. Brown should have considered different treatment and medication options instead of simply continuing the care the treating physician was following, as the circumstances could have been different and adapted the practical skills to the cultural context of Arturo and his mother. 3. The aspect of quality care in this case is that the care must be safe. Patient safety is very important in providing high-quality care and it must be provided in a way that minimizes risk and harm to the patient. Dr. Brown should have used a qualified interpreter to communicate with Arturo's mother. In this case, safe, quality care was not provided due to lack of communication between the provider and the patient's mother, which led to the patient's drug overdose.
