Urinary incontinence is the loss of bladder control and causes involuntary loss of urine. It affects many people and has an impact on the physical well-being, quality of life as well as the emotional and social health of those affected. Many people with urinary incontinence resort to surgical procedures and medications to successfully treat the condition. However, medications and surgical or medical interventions are ineffective or partially effective for some people with urinary incontinence. Thus, other strategies for managing urinary incontinence are necessary, such as containment. For older women, more conservative, non-invasive urinary incontinence management strategies are likely more acceptable. It is therefore important to determine whether these more conservative and non-invasive treatments are effective in treating urinary incontinence. One possible management strategy is to use an incorporated underwear with magnetic discs each sewn inside the underwear. The magnetic discs generate a pulse that induces electrical depolarization of the pelvic floor nerves, causing the pelvic floor muscles to contract. No studies have yet supported the positive effect of this treatment for urinary incontinence. The purpose of the research experiment presented in the research article “Pelvic Static Magnetic Stimulation to Control Urinary Incontinence in Older Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial” is to “estimate the effectiveness and safety of a commercially available underwear that incorporates 15 static magnets of approximately 900 Gauss each, arranged in front, behind and below the pelvis, compared to placebo in the treatment of elderly women suffering from urinary incontinence. » The method of the experiment uses a random middle of paper......, some participants decide not to wear underwear. Due to the factors affecting the experiment and the small size of the subject, the effectiveness of the static magnetic underwear cannot be determined. Further studies are necessary for the experience to be more conclusive; a larger number of participants is needed and certain factors must be excluded from the experiment. Urinary incontinence is a major problem for many people and some treatments take time and carry many risks, such as inserting a catheter. Additionally, this is a problem for many older people, as they are less mobile and may not be able to care for themselves; this can lead to more complications such as urinary tract infection. This study may not be conclusive, but it is a step toward finding a more non-invasive and conservative way to manage urinary incontinence..
