His religious conversion is also a key element of his narrative which sets the stage for his beliefs and his association as a religious individual for many of the readers he attempts to persuade. He identifies himself as a true Christian who places his greatest faith in the Lord. He does this to the extent that he believes that his path in life is predetermined and that his efforts to escape slavery are what the Lord desires for him. Equiano considers himself a “favorite of heaven” because of the chance he experienced during his slavery (page 4). Time and time again, we see Equiano's ability to move past the horrors he has faced and embrace the life he finds himself in. After being sold into slavery, he had the chance to learn to read, write and speak several languages. He was able to earn his freedom unlike most slaves of his time. In addition to his education and freedom, while under the ownership of Captain Pascal, Equiano was able to perfect his knowledge of the sea and his position as a worker on several ships. He kept this love for the sea for many years. What I also find ironic and honorable, Equiano loved the sea and the adventure it held for him, but given the revolting carnage he had seen and experienced, he still embraced his
