The drought and dust storm took away the couples' happiness and changed their lives. Sinclair Ross' other story, "The Painted Door" is very similar to "The Midday Lamp", a couple living in the mountains experiences a very severe snowstorm, which causes conflict in the couple due to a feeling of isolation. Setting is a crucial element in establishing conflict that could change the character's actions, thoughts, and words. “The Lamp at Noon” and “The Painted Door” are one of the best examples.
