The Mexican-American War. The Mexican-American War was a process of years of battles between Mexicans and Americans, but I think after this backgrounder you will seem to know a little more knowledge about it. How it all started, in the beginning the Americans and the Mexicans both wanted to control Texas, but at the time it was part of Mexican territory, and soon enough the Americans wanted to control it so much that they started to travel to Texas. land. Part of the reason the Americans wanted it so much was because it was a big country and it had a lot of resources and they just didn't want the Mexicans to have control of it. (“Social Studies for Children” The Mexican-American War) As more and more Americans settled in this country, everyone knew that it would most certainly become a part of the United States. Another reason why the war between the Mexicans and the Americans took place was because of the Louisiana Purchase, this had pushed the western borders of the father of the United States further than ever before. After Lewis and Clark's victory, more Americans explored and settled in the Louisiana Territory, and the Louisiana Territory was also right next to the Texas Territory. So the Americans thought that if they made the Louisiana Purchase, it would be easier to get Texas. (“Social Studies for Children” The Mexican-American War) The war was primarily determined by the idea of “manifest destiny,” the belief that the United States had the God-given right to occupy and civilize the the entire continent. As large numbers of Americans began to head west in search of land, the fact that most of these areas were already home to people was not recognized.
