Essay / Themes of the Unfinished Journey - 1062
and Russian relations in spectacular fashion. I really learned a lot about the Cold War from The Unfinished Journey that I didn't know. The most important thing I learned was that America did not have to go to war with Russia. There is this ingrained idea among Americans that the Russians were going to come in, bomb all the Americans and turn us all into communists. However, the Russians really had no way of doing this until much later. Which, more than likely, began when Truman gave up the atomic bomb in the face of Stalin, which, had he not done so, might never have had an arms race, and therefore no threat. Overall, Chafe's reading on the origins of the Cold War was most enjoyable and I would definitely recommend it.
