  • Essay / Gun Control in America - 832

Gun ControlBy living a life in America, we are all entitled to all the rights included in the Constitution. One of them was the Second Amendment which gives the right to bear arms. The purpose was to protect oneself from danger, but nowadays many people take advantage of it and use it in the wrong way. I believe our government needs to place a strict limit on gun ownership. Gun control was a phenomenal problem in our country. On December 15, 1791, the Second Amendment was established as one of the ten major amendments to the Constitution by James Madison. The amendment states that people have the right to carry a weapon to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their property. To legally obtain a gun, you must be 21 years of age and older, with no criminal history or committed to a psychiatric facility, then you must apply for one and pass a handgun safety test. After the whole process, you can easily buy a gun. The main purpose of this amendment was self-defense, but now people are taking advantage of it and using it for violent purposes. Over the years, people have often used it to kill and harm others instead of protecting themselves. They used guns for the wrong purpose and it affected many other people. I believe our government needs to have strict laws and more requirements for people to own a gun. It's true that our current laws prevent some people from getting a gun, but they don't completely prevent them from getting access to a gun and using it to do something horrible. In 2011, the United States recorded 12,664 murders, of which 8,583 were caused by guns, or 68% of 100. Guns are one of the fastest and most dangerous weapons available. . If our government doesn't act quickly, there will be paperwork...and it will also help "law enforcement prevent their weapons from being used against them" (www.theverge.com) But opponents add that even with this invention, it would not change the percentage of violent weapons in the United States. Gun control is a serious debate that must be brought to an end. It is all too obvious that these guns and amendments are no longer what they supported. There are already too many incidents, not just a few. If this massacre of 20 innocent children didn't change the terms of the debate over gun regulations, I don't know what would. Do we wait until something even more horrible happens and then take action? It's no longer about protecting one individual, it's about everyone in this country and everyone around us..
