    In Annawadi, the slum in the book “Behind the Beautiful Eternals”, almost everything falls under the law of the free market. What most countries consider to be “fundamental rights” must be paid for by the Indian population of Annawadi. Clean water, education and medical care in hospitals are just some of the things exploited by police, gangs and slum landlords. The liberalization of India has led the country to begin a process of economic reform. People from the countryside flocked to the cities to find work in the booming new economy that no longer depended on agriculture. With the increase in population around bustling cities, a competitiveness for opportunities has arisen.
