Everyone is called to embark on a lifelong journey where the mind is nourished and challenged with fundamental information that is essential to becoming someone in the community, in the country, even in the world and it all starts with that little mustard seed of school planted within oneself. To succeed and progress as a society, no one should be denied the right to education; it is inalienable. Opportunities in this direction should be available everywhere and should be granted without doubt to those who have an immense desire to pursue academic achievements. Being legal or illegal should not affect this because the right to education should never be limited. In the United States, legislation has been proposed to help Latin American high school students who are denied the right to attend college because they are undocumented. The Development, Relief, and Education of Alien Minors Act, more commonly known as the DREAM Act, is aimed at high school students and young adults who wish to become legal citizens and pursue a college or academics. However, certain terms and conditions must be met to be eligible. Some of these requirements include: must be under the age of thirty-five, must have lived in the United States for at least five years, and must have graduated from high school. Although the intentions of this law are sound, there are discrepancies with it. An example would be that the DREAM Act would encourage more illegal immigration. It is estimated that “1.3 million illegal aliens will be eligible for DREAM Act amnesty.” (Numbersusa) if adopted.
