Every day, they live in a world where violence is considered appropriate. Our laws have allowed individuals to slip through the cracks of our justice system. The criminals who raped and killed walked on technicalities. The results left police officers feeling like they had failed the system. Some police officers took matters into their own hands. Police across America have been involved in scandals and drug busts. They are abusing the power they have been given. Communities began to distrust the police due to their behavior towards citizens. People have been beaten and harassed by the guys in blue. People in communities have seen police push people around and take things from them for no reason. People are getting the wrong message. The public no longer differentiates between the police and criminals. Problems like police corruption have no easy answers. However, there are measures to target the root of the problem. We must start by holding officers accountable for their actions. If a police officer uses too much force, they should be placed on probation. The public must show the police that no bad behavior will be tolerated. Mentalities must change within ministries. When departments no longer ignore complaints of excessive use of force, police attitudes will begin to change. Monitoring of agents must be carried out more often. More psychologists and criminologists are needed to identify police officers in difficulty or on the verge of mental illness.
