Essay / Advantages and Disadvantages of International Aid to Poor Countries Poor countries have received aid from the international community for over a century now. While such aid is supposed to be seen as an act of kindness on the part of donor countries or international bodies, it has led to over-reliance on the part of developing countries. They have become accustomed to estimating and including international aid in their national budgets to reduce their trade balance deficits. It is believed that foreign aid is necessary for poor countries in order to break the cycle of poverty that binds their citizens in low productivity areas and so that their economy is not weak. However, some critics view the extension of aid to poor countries as a way of keeping nations in an economic slumber so that they can only wake up by devising ways to promote self-sufficiency. Because of these two schools of thought on the subject, a debate has arisen over which side is more rational and factual than the other. The unsustainable nature of international aid, however, leaves the question of what might happen if foreign aid were not available to poor countries. After a thorough examination of the effects of aid to poor countries, it is enough to see that giving international aid to poor countries is more disadvantageous than beneficial to these nations. This point is argued through an analysis of the pros and cons of international aid to poor countries, with appropriate examples from various parts of the world to prove this position. International aid promotes economic laziness in poor countries, forcing them to stay longer in the country. poverty when they could easily get by middle of paper...... The New York Times, 2009. Web.
