Explanatory Review of a Short Story “How to Tell a True War Story” In Tim O´Brian's short excerpt, How to Tell a True Story of war, the narrator recounts his experiences of hardening during the Vietnam War (1956-1975). O'Brian details Rat's history during the war and his experiences with the loss of his best friend. Through the use of literary devices such as imagery, paradoxical ideas, as well as juxtaposing themes, O'Brian is able to deliver an effective message about the complex relationship between physical warfare and war narratives. The use of images and descriptive language allows for a realistic experience for the reader and ultimately amplifies the audience's perception of the text. Additionally, paradoxes are included to add meaning to the text by highlighting the story's subtle and more complex ideas and themes. Likewise, the strategic juxtoposition of parallel ideas and objects to emphasize contrast essentially creates a sense of anticipation and reinforces symbolism. One of the main aspects of the story is the sensory details that are implemented to further transport the reader into the war scenes. In parts of the story, first-hand accounts are incorporated to provide a better understanding of the dangers and thrills that constantly surround Vietnamese soldiers. In the middle of the story, O'Brien immerses himself in the mission in which his friend Rat sees his best friend, Kurt Lemon, die by means of a trap. He comments on Lemon's death: "When he died, it was almost beautiful, the way the sunlight surrounded him, lifted him and sucked him high into a tree full of moss and vines and white flowers." (2). The death of a comrade seemed to have greatly affected...... middle of paper ...... savagely massacred by a hardened soldier, symbolizes the innocence of the two soldiers who had been savagely carried away by the realities of war. The story not only recounts the events, but also delves into the deeper meaning of each war story. In O'Brien's comment, he alludes to the fact that the truth is often overlooked and that war is not a unique subject. The truths of war are contradictory, as war can be an experience of both beauty and horror. The experiences one must endure are inarticulate and often filled with countless emotions. Through the use of literary devices such as imagery, paraxoxias, and juxtopositions of themes, O'Brian was able to create an affective short story that further informed readers of the "truth" behind each war story. Thus, narrowing the gap between physical warfare and war stories.
